Blades make major changes
28 May 2009 - 13:41:43
Sheffield United have responded to their failure to win promotion to the Premier League by making major squad changes.
Just 24 hours after manager Kevin Blackwell confirmed he was staying on at Bramall Lane, the Blades have released striker Danny Webber and defender Ugo Ehiogu following the end of their contracts.
Keith Quinn, Jamie Annerson, Maxime Chanot and Ben Starosta have also been released, while loanees Craig Beattie, Greg Halford, Arturo Lupoli and John-Joe O'Toole have all returned to their parent clubs.
Meanwhile, Blackwell has placed Lee Hendrie, David Carney, Nicky Law and Zeyn S-Latef on the transfer list.
"In terms of the Blades' promotion push, this will provide all four with the opportunity of first-team football elsewhere whilst reducing the wage bill and enabling more flexibility for new signings," read a club statement.
However, goalkeeper Paddy Kenny and midfielder Nick Montgomery will be staying on after the club decided to take up options on their contracts.
In addition, new deals will also be offered to experienced pair Ian Bennett and Leigh Bromby.
