Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell has justified starting Arsenal loanee Kyle Bartley in their 2-1 defeat at Preston North End on Tuesday evening.
The 18-year-old made the temporary transfer just moments before the side set off for Lancashire and despite not playing with his team-mates, he performed admirably.
He was added to the squad after captain Chris Morgan was ruled out for a fortnight with a rib injury.
Speaking to reporters, Blackwell said: "You'd rather develop them at that age but sometimes things work out differently.
"Kyle comes with a really good background and from a really good club. He certainly has pedigree.
"If they are good enough then, as has been shown in the past, a player can really push on."
