Wood strikes for Sky Blues

Former Sheffield Wednesday captain Richard Wood grabbed a 79th-minute equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw for Coventry. Wood denied his old employers three precious points in their battle to avoid relegation from the Coca-Cola Championship. The centre-back, wearing the Sky Blues armband in the absence of Stephen Wright, took advantage of a defensive mix-up between keeper Lee Grant and defender Darren Purse to head into an empty net and keep the hosts' faint play-off hopes alive. Wednesday had looked to be heading for a crucial win after Luke Varney had broken the deadlock in the 67th minute with a great finish from an acute angle, beating the formidable Keiren Westwood at his near post after a quick solo burst. It was a fair result on the overall balance of play after Wednesday enjoyed the better of the opening 45 minutes against a below-par Sky Blues side, who were a different proposition after the break.
