Wednesday win twice on Tuesday

Double local victory for Owls Sheffield Wednesday recorded two comfortable victories on Tuesday evening as the club sent out two sides to face local opposition following their return from a pre-season training camp in Austria. An Owls eleven cruised to a 9-0 victory over Hallam FC at Sandygate and at the same time on the outskirts of the city another Wednesday side beat Stocksbridge Park Steels 6-1. At Hallam the Owls lined up with youngster Arron Jameson in goal, academy product Barnett and Palmer were also included. These youngsters were backed up by the likes of Purse, Spurr, Buxton, Boden, Miller and Tudgay whilst new boys Heffernan and Teale were also in the side. It took Wednesday less than 5 minutes to open the scoring through Tommy Miller. Further 1st half goals from Tudgay, Miller, Boden and two for Paul Heffernan gave the Owls a resounding 6-0 lead at the break. The match continued to be one-way traffic in the second half and the good crowd that had braved the inclement weather saw further goals from Tudgay who completed his hat-trick with a second half double and Lewis Buxton. Whilst it would be unwise to read too much into friendly games like this it’s always nice for the supporters to see a few goals and perhaps the biggest surprise of all was the fact that Wednesday achieved this victory wearing the yellow shirts in which they had not managed a single win and had produced some dire displays in last season.   With Alan Irvine overseeing matters at Hallam Wednesday’s assistant boss Rob Kelly took charge of the team that turned out against Stocksbridge. This line up consisted of Richard O’Donnell in goal with a back four of Otsemobor, Hinds, Beevers and Jones. Sedgwick, O’Connor and Potter started in midfield along with trialist Adriano Moke whilst Jermaine Johnson played off new boy Neil Mellor in attack. As at Hallam, Wednesday wasting no time in getting into the ascendancy as Mellor gave them the lead inside 10 minutes and the same player doubled the lead just before the half hour mark. Jermaine Johnson got himself on the score-sheet moments later and Mellor completed his hat-trick to make it 4-0 at half-time. JJ added his second and Mellor bagged his fourth with half an hour still remaining but the Owls took their foot off the gas from here on in with Steels grabbing a consolation from the penalty spot with around 15 minutes remaining.   The squad will now get back together in preparation for what is expected to be a sterner test at Grimsby Town on Saturday and Alan Irvine has certainly been given food for thought as he looks to shape his team and determine the strongest line up in the upcoming friendly games ahead of the start of the new season on August 7th. New signing Clinton Morrison was not included in Tuesday evening’s games having only signed for the Owls yesterday but he may be in contention to play some part at the weekend.
