How did the Owls players fair in the 2-2 draw. Nicky Weaver = 6.5. Owls keeper was not at fault for either Charlton goal and had very little to do overall. Showed good distribution at times. Michael Morrison = 6.5. Playing at right-back Morrison may perhaps have done better in defending the opening goal though he wasn’t completely at fault. Recovered from this to put in a competent home debut. Daniel Jones = 6.5. It appears as though Jones would be better suited to a wide midfield role than full-back. In the 1st half he appeared to run into the space without much idea of what to do from there and was subsequently closed down easily. Was better in the 2nd half with Wednesday on the front foot and is a very capable crosser of the ball. Reda Johnson = 8. Defended well on his home debut and capped his performance with the equalising goal. Very strong in the air and comparisons with Bougherra seem accurate though at times he may be a little too confident in his own ability bordering on complacency, Clearly has talent. Darren Purse = 5. Had a shocking start to the game. Failed to spot the danger quick enough and close down after Morrison had been caught out for the 1st goal and then inexplicably allowed Anyinsah to get past him before hauling him down in the penalty area. He incurred the wrath of the supporters throughout the 1st half and his distribution was poor at times. To his credit he improved in the 2nd half but the damage had already been done and his place in the side has to be under threat. Almost capped his performance with an own goal late on but to be fair he did well to intercept a cross which may have been tapped in by Sodje had he not intervened. Chris Sedgwick = 6. Very poor in the first half. His lack of pace does him no favours when the team needs to get back into the game. Was a little surprised that he wasn’t substituted at half-time but he improved and provided the cross for the equalising goal. Gary Teale = 6.5. Was one of the few players to offer a threat in the 1st half and although everything he attempted didn’t come off he was at least trying to make things happen and it was a surprise to see him replaced at half-time. James O’Connor = 7. Had a busy game in the centre of the park and was lively throughout. Contributed by breaking up Charlton attacks and almost scored a fine goal near the end. Played well but can’t help but think Wednesday are missing Coke’s energy and ability going forward in midfield. Tommy Miller = 7. Was out of sorts in the first half, hitting a few missed placed passes and getting caught in possession. His penalty wasn’t the worst struck by any means and credit must go to the keeper for a good save. As with most he improved in the 2nd half and always tries to make himself available in the midfield. Neil Mellor = 6. He had a quiet first half as Wednesday struggled to make much of an impression going forward. Got the hook at half-time. Clinton Morrison = 6.5 As with Mellor he offered little in the 1st half though they were both feeding on scraps. Could just as easily have been him to get substituted at half-time but he was more involved in the 2nd period. Subs: Jermaine Johnson = 7.5. his introduction at half-time made a difference as Wednesday got on the front foot from the off in the 2nd half. Ran at the Charlton defence causing them plenty of problems. Didn’t always make the right decision in the end but is clearly a threat to the opposition. Paul Heffernan = 8.5. Scored within the 1st 5 minutes of his introduction at half-time and was denied the winning goal by a fine late save by the Charlton keeper. His all round play was the highlight of the Owls performance as his intelligent link up play allowed the home side to maintain possession and develop attacks in the final third of the field. All in all it was the stereotypical game of two halves. Wednesday were poor in the 1st half but were excellent at times in the 2nd half and could easily have snatched all 3 points which looked virtually impossible at the break.
