Wednesday make Dave Jones manager

Third tier promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday said Friday they have appointed former Cardiff boss Dave Jones as their new manager, having sacked Gary Megson on Wednesday.

Megson was fired despite Sunday's derby win over Sheffield United which kept Wednesday in touch with their second-placed rivals as both chase runaway leaders Charlton.

Jones won the vote of chairman Milan Mandaric who reportedly had also considered former Blackburn boss Paul Ince for the Hillsborough hotseat.

Jones, 55, left second tier Cardiff last May following successive play-off defeats.

"This is a fantastic football club and a fantastic challenge for me," he said.

"Promotion is the first ambition and from there is to try and get to the Holy Grail, which is the Premiership.

"I've had a lot of calls asking why I have dropped down to League One but I don't see it that way. I look at the size of the club and think this is a club that can go places."
