Varney is keen to play a role for the Owls during his stay at Hillsborough, but his long-term aim is to show Derby manager Nigel Clough that he can make an impact at Pride Park.
"I have had a tough time since Nigel Clough took over at Derby and it is just nice to be playing again," Varney told the Daily Express.
"Since he came in I have picked up an injury and had a couple of bouts of illness, so it hasn't really happened for me.
"But the manager has told me I am still in his plans for next season, so I will just try to get a few more games under my belt here and see what happens. I still have a long contract at Derby and want to do well there."
