Varney return to Owls on hold

Luke Varney's proposed move to Sheffield Wednesday is on hold after Owls boss Alan Irvine admitted he can not afford the Derby striker. Varney is not part of County manager Nigel Clough's plans and is keen to return to Hillsborough after spending the first half of the season on loan at the South Yorkshire club. Irvine is keen on the 27-year-old but knows no transfer is possible unless he is able to move out other players. "I know Luke Varney did very well when he was here," Irvine told Wednesday's official website. "He is a very good player and someone I have known of since he was at Crewe but right at this moment, without any other players going out, we don't have the funds to bring anybody else in."
