Swansea 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

13 March 2010 04:58
Play-off chasing Swansea City wasted a host of chances as Sheffield Wednesday held on for a goalless draw to move out of the relegation zone.Swans strike duo Shefki Kuqi and Lee Trundle spurned opportunities while Ashley Williams and Darren Pratley also missed late close-range headers. [LNB]The hosts showed why they are the weakest attack in the division as David Cotterill failed from long-range shots. [LNB]But Leon Clarke missed a chance to win it for Wednesday in stoppage time. [LNB]Swansea consolidated fourth place as the Welsh club avoided defeat for the 14th time in 15 games [LNB]But boss Paulo Sousa would have wanted better against a side who had lost successive games on the road. [LNB]The home side struggled to create clear chances in the first-half but Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant had to be alert to save in-form forward Cotterill's 25-yard drive. [LNB]Kuqi was thrown on at half-time and the big Finn almost had an immediate impact when he smashed a volley narrowly wide from 18 yards.[LNB] How crucial could that point be in Wednesday's survival bid? Jermaine Johnson continued to cause the Swans problems with his mazy runs and he spun full-back Angel Rangel with ease but Clarke could not latch on to his cut back. [LNB]Pratley then spearheaded a Swansea counter and Grant needed to be alert to save at the feet of substitute Cedric van der Gun. [LNB]Swansea's best chance was when Van der Gun whipped in a teasing cross which Pratley headed over from six yards. [LNB]Owls midfielder Tommy Miller almost scored with 20 minutes remaining but his strike from inside the area - which was bound for the Swansea net - was blocked by Williams. [LNB]Substitute Trundle could have won it for the home side with five minutes to go when Mark Gower found him six yards from goal, but he slashed his effort horribly wide. [LNB]Then Williams headed a Gower cross past the post with the goal at his mercy in the final minute as Wednesday held on for what could prove to be a crucial point for their fight for Championship survival. [LNB][LNB][LNB] [LNB][LNB]Sousa's plea to anxious Swans fans[LNB]Swansea City manager Paulo Sousa said:[LNB] "It was a difficult game as I predicted it would be. [LNB]"They were well organised but we seemed a little tired and although we created a few good chances we never had any luck. [LNB]"The players have plenty of desire and I made the changes at half-time to switch things around and be more aggressive. [LNB]"In this type of game we were unable to play the way we would like to but the players are tired both physically and mentally and we haven't had time to prepare for different opponents. [LNB]"I have respect for all our opponents and we try to win every game but our fans must be educated to know that they need to help the players and not pass their anxiety on to the field as we need them to believe and support." [LNB][LNB] [LNB][LNB]Irvine pleased with Wednesday point[LNB]Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine said:[LNB] "I think we deserved a draw and had to work very hard for it as we knew there would be periods when we didn't have the ball and were prepared for that. [LNB]"Midway through the first half we began passing the ball much better and it was only in the closing stages that I felt a little worried. [LNB]"Swansea have a fantastic record of winning games 1-0 and I was a little nervous as the game moved to a close. [LNB]"We have recently played three of the top sides and not looked out of place but we have to build on these performances to push on and have a lot of hard work to do. [LNB]"Four games ago we were hammered at Reading but the players have shown great character in coming back from that defeat."
