Carvalhal begins Wednesday reign

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal will take charge of his first competitive game against Bristol City.

Portuguese Carvalhal has made 11 summer signings and all of them will be in contention to make their debuts, but defender Claude Dielna and midfielder Filipe Melo both miss out through injury.

Skipper Glenn Loovens is expected to start after missing the Owls' final pre-season friendly win against St Mirren last week.

Latest signings Rhoys Wiggins and Modou Sougou are also likely to be included in Carvalhal's squad, while fellow summer recruits Darryl Lachman, Vincent Sasso, Jack Hunt, Marco Matias, Ross Wallace, Alex Lopez and Lucas Joao could make their debuts.

New signing Ryan Fredericks comes straight into contention for Bristol City after completing his move from Tottenham.

The 22-year-old wing-back spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough and only joined the Robins on Thursday.

But manager Steve Cotterill has only signed two players this summer - French striker Jonathan Kodjia being the other - and does not have sufficient players with first-team experience to fill a seven-man substitutes' bench.

Providing Mark Little and Scott Wagstaff are declared fit, the manager will have 16 players with first-team experience available for selection with rookie goalkeeper Max O'Leary set to join other members of the club's Under-21 development squad on the bench at Hillsborough.
