Return to winning ways pleases Irvine

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine was pleased that his side did not bow under pressure as they ended a poor month of results by beating Notts County 2-0 at Meadow Lane. The Owls had not won a match since they last played the Magpies in the Johnstone Paint Trophy six games ago. But they took the points thanks to Marcus Tudgay's 52nd-minute opener and Darren Potter's last-minute strike, either side of Alan Judge's red card for County. "I knew it was going to be a big crowd and we know what we're in for when we come away from home. But there were a lot of players who did a good job," said Irvine. Two divisions separated these sides last season but it was the Magpies who dominated the first half of the match, and Irvine was happy to have recorded a clean sheet despite the opponents' numerous chances. He added: "For 25 minutes they had a lot of attempts at our goal, probably too many, but we weathered the storm. "With the exception of Plymouth, we've not conceded many goals, and our problem in recent games has been that we haven't been able to score too many. The clean sheet is obviously something we're pleased about."
