Purse is new Wednesday captain

Laws made the former Birmingham, West Brom and Cardiff defender his first signing of the close season in May with the specific purpose of adding some much-needed experience to a squad he feels can challenge for a play-off place. Laws told the club's official website: "I can officially confirm that Darren Purse will be my captain for the new season. "He has an abundance of experience in the role and I feel that gives him the advantage over Richard Wood at this time, but let me take nothing away from Richard Wood, who I think is a fantastic player for this football club. "I have explained the situation to him and he is very disappointed because he wants to be captain of the team. He understands the reasons behind this move and I very much see him in the future as a captain of Sheffield Wednesday. "But Darren Purse has been brought into the club for a specific reason - not only his qualities as a player, but also as a professional and a leader."
