Owls wind up notice is no joke

Wednesday issue statement to allay fears News broke late last night that Sheffield Wednesday have been issued with a winding up petition by HMRC and this is set to go to the courts in August. The story ignited fresh fears about the club’s financial plight but the club has issued a statement via it’s official website, www.swfc.co.uk to try and ease any worries supporters may have in relation to the possibility of administration or even worse. The statement confirms that the club has outstanding payments of over £500,000 owed to HMRC in respect of PAYE. It states that SWFC have been in continued discussions with Her Majesty’s Revenue over this issue and they are surprised that it has come to this. The club stresses that there is no major cause for concern and the club is not going to be wound up or enter administration as a result of this action. Whilst this may come as a relief to the fans it is certainly not good publicity for the club and raises more questions with regards to the clubs cash flow as things stand. The news is also likely to raise interest at clubs targeting Owls players in the transfer market, particularly Burnley who are interested in Wednesday’s number one, Lee Grant who is a key member of the squad.
