Wednesday centre back leaves Hillsborough

Transfer activity at Hillsborough so far this summer has been mainly concerned with new players coming into the club but Monday saw a significant departure.

Club captain Rob Jones has left Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent. Having joined the Owls on loan from Scunthorpe late on in the 2010-11 he made the move permanent during the summer and was appointed as captain ahead of the 2011-12 campaign.

Jones made 33 league appearances last season, scoring 4 goals as the club won automatic promotion. He lost his place in the side towards the end of the campaign under new manager Dave Jones but he continued to play a captains role in and around the dressing room and as a Wednesday fan he was as delighted as anyone when the season ended in success.

One of his best games in a Wednesday shirt came in the Sheffield derby at Hillsborough in February when he led the team to a 1-0 win that proved vital in achieving the objective of automatic promotion.

The 32-year-old has been linked with a move to local League One side Doncaster Rovers.
