Sheffield Wednesday have stepped up their bid for an automatic promotion place by clinching the signing of Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 20-year-old forward signed for the Toon in 2008 and has made over 50 appearances for them, mostly as a substitute. Ranger had a short spell on loan at Barnsley earlier in the season and is expected to be in the Owls squad for the visit to Leyton Orient on Saturday.

The tall striker will add power and pace to Wednesday’s forward line as they look to beat local rivals Sheffield United and Huddersfield to 2nd place in League One.
