Sheffield Wednesday have moved to bolster their defensive options by adding young defender James Tavernier to their ranks on an emergency loan deal.
The Owls are without 1st-choice right-back Lewis Buxton due to a hamstring injury and fellow right-back Jon Otsemobor has been out for some time. Liam Palmer deputised at right-back in Saturday’s win at Tranmere but he is a wide midfield player by trade and manager Gary Megson has opted to bring in a specialist defender.
20-year-old Tavernier has signed a deal that will see him stay at Hillsborough until January and his versatility should be an asset to the promotion chasing side. The Bradford-born defender is also comfortable playing at centre-back and so he will be able to provided valuable cover should the Owls suffer any further injury or suspension setbacks during his stay at the club.
Tavernier has recently spent a successful spell on loan at fellow League One side Carlisle and was impressive in the Cumbrian’s 3-2 victory over Wednesday last month.
