Keeper rumours off the mark

News of Chris Kirkland’s future has today been confirmed via Sheffield Wednesday’s official website, www.swfc.co.uk

The former England goalkeeper has not travelled with the Owls squad to their training camp in Portugal and there has been plenty of speculation in recent weeks regarding his future.

Some websites and publications had reported that Kirkland had quit Hillsborough, others stated that his contract had been cancelled due to a personal family issue. Other media reports highlighted the time it was taking him to commute from his home as being the main factor regarding this issue.

Here at www.owls-mad.co.uk the decision was taken not to comment on the matter without some verification of the facts and today’s news appears to have vindicated the move not to report formally on unfounded rumours of a personal nature.

Kirkland’s statement revealed that he had been given time off to attend to a personal family matter which understandably was not divulged into. The keeper has thanked the manager, chairman and the supporters and has reaffirmed his full commitment towards playing for the club in the Championship this forthcoming season.

Wednesday are due to face Reading in Portugal tomorrow before returning home and Kirkland will link up the squad on their return.
