Wednesday pick up Championship midfielder It has been a long wait given that Owls fans were told that early season ticket sales would give them a head start in the close season transfer department but Sheffield Wednesday have now made their first addition to the playing staff since the end of the 2009/10 season. Alan Irvine has picked up a player he is very familiar with by securing the services of former Preston North End midfielder Chris Sedgwick. Sedgwick, a Sheffield lad and Wednesday fan is coming to the end of his contract with North End and will officially become an Owls player by virtue of a free contract signing on July 1st. The 30-year-old is most accustomed to playing on the right-side of midfield but is also capable of filling the same position on the left and has had spells in central midfield during his career. Sedgwick began his professional career at nearby Rotherham, making over 200 appearances for the Millers before moving on to Preston in 2004 where he went on to make a further 200+ appearances. Although not blessed with outstanding pace Sedgwick is known as being a good crosser of the ball and a player with a good engine and excellent attitude and work rate. Having gained a wealth of experience in the Championship in recent years he has the ability and know how to be a real asset to the Owls in League One and is a positive signing for the club, with Wednesday still some way short of a full squad there should be more to follow in the coming days and weeks prior to the start of pre-season training.
