Owls enter last chance saloon - Wednesday Vs Palace team news & preview

01 May 2010 13:51
Home side fighting fit for day of destiny Sheffield Wednesday entertain Crystal Palace in front of a packed Hillsborough crowd and a live BBC TV audience on Sunday with both clubs out to defend their Championship status. A point will be enough for Palace to survive but a Wednesday win would keep the up and relegate their opponents to League One. Wednesday manager Alan Irvine looks set to have a full squad of players at his disposal for the crunch tie. Tommy Miller has not featured for around a month but is expected to be in the squad though is unlikely to start given his lack of action recently. Defender Lewis Buxton is also available and influential attacking player Jermaine Johnson has recovered from a knock that saw him substituted in last weekends defeat at Cardiff. Irvine has the option of playing Johnson as a striker or a winger and is keeping his cards close to his chest with all of his options ahead of the Owls most important match for years. Had Crystal Palace managed to beat WBA at home last Monday night then they would already have sent Wednesday down. They could only manage a draw, giving the Owls renewed hope and they also lost a key player in that match. Midfielder Neil Danns lost his cool and was sent off for a head butt late on, ruling him out of the Hillsborough finale. Defender Lee Hills remains sidelined due to a knee ligament injury. Nick Carle is favourite to come into the side in place of Danns though strikers Alan Lee and Stern John could also come into contention should manager Paul Hart choose to go with a more attacking line up. Only a win will do for the Owls but they have been in short supply of late with no victories in the last six and only one in the last eleven. Palace travel to Sheffield with a fine away record that has seen them lose just five of 22 in the league this season on their travels and they have suffered just one defeat in their last eight league games away from Selhurst Park. The two sides played out a 0-0 draw in London back in September and Palace dumped Wednesday out of the F.A. Cup with a 2-1 win at Hillsborough in January. More encouraging news from an Owls perspective comes from the fact that they have not lost at home to the Eagles in four league games since their return to the Championship, winning two and drawing two.
