No surprises at Owls awards dinner
Keeper walks away with main prizes Sheffield Wednesday’s annual player of the season awards were held at Hillsborough last night and it there will be few that will argue that Lee Grant is not deserving of the awards he claimed in what has been an utterly disappointing campaign. The Owls number one won the accolade for the club’s official player of the year and also received the players’ player of the year award. With Wednesday on the verge of relegation to League One in all truth there have been very few in the squad that have shown any sort of consistency over the course of the season to challenge Grant for the award with perhaps James O’Connor one of very few to come away with any credit. Although Grant has made a couple of high profile blunders recently he has saved the Owls on countless occasions during the 2009/10 campaign and had it not been for him it is probable that the club would have suffered their fate a while ago and an embarrassing goal difference would have looked even worse. The former Derby keeper highlighted in accepting the awards that he was proud of recognition he has achieved but would have preferred the award to go to an attacking player as this would have meant that the club would have had a far more successful campaign. The facts however don’t lie and the truth is that no one in an attacking position could have got anywhere near to claiming either award this season. Other winners on the night were Liam Palmer and Etienne Esajas who claimed the Academy player of the year and goal of the season accolades respectively, the Dutch winger winning the award for his fine strike in the 3-2 Sheffield derby defeat. Wednesday will be hoping that West Bromwich Albion can do them a favour tonight at Selhurst Parkas as a draw or an away win would keep alive their survival hopes and set up a final day showdown with Palace on Sunday. A home win tonight would consign the Owls to their fate and with the acclaimed comedy club night set to take place at Hillsborough on Friday evening the Last Laugh really would be at the Owls expense in what has been a sorry season.
