Lame performance at the Lamex as Owls away form turns from bad to embarrassing

JJ sees red as Wednesday ship 5 Sheffield Wednesday failed to build on Saturday’s fine home win against high-flying MK Dons as their miserable away run continued with a 5-1 defeat to Stevenage at the Lamex Stadium. The home side started at a pace that left the Owls stunned and Stevenage had already spurned a couple of chances to go in front before they did open the scoring after just 3 minutes through Craig Reid. John Mousinho doubled the lead on 10 minutes and the outcome was more or less done and dusted when Michael Bostwick made it 3-0. The home side didn’t let up and Wednesday’s misery was compounded further 7 minutes before the break when a spot of pinball in the Owls penalty area ended in Lawrie Wilson scoring with the aid of more than one deflection. David Prutton, Rob Jones and Julian Bennett were dragged off at half-time and this did at least serve to slow the home side down but a 5th goal duly arrived on 68 minutes when Darius Charles slotted past O’Donnell. Gary Madine bagged his 6th of the season with 5 minutes to go but it was scant consolation as the visitors slumped to their 3rd defeat from 4 in the league on their travels this season. To make matters worse, Jermaine Johnson was sent off in the final stages for an off the ball incident. Having just returned from injury the winger will now have to sit more games out as he serves a suspension. Manager Gary Megson vowed to make his side much harder to break down this season in the belief that a solid defensive unit would provide the foundation for a promotion challenge yet they have not kept a clean sheet in the league since the opening day of the season. In the 17 away games in all competitions since Megson took charge during the 2nd half of last season his side have managed to win just 2 of them.
