Manager Dave Jones paid tribute to chairman Milan Mandaric after his Sheffield Wednesday side sealed promotion with a 2-0 victory at home to Wycombe.

Knowing that victory would see them clinch second place ahead of arch-rivals Sheffield United, Michail Antonio gave Wednesday a 25th-minute lead following a burst into the area.

"I'm pleased for the chairman because he made a big call. When I arrived, the chairman was criticised by a section of fans," Jones said. "I've repaid him in the best way I could by delivering what he wanted and what he deserves."

Wycombe keeper Nikki Bull, who had kept the home side at bay with some fine saves, was beaten again by Nile Ranger's 52nd-minute header.

Jones said: "It was about just winning the game. To be honest, I don't care if we played good, bad or indifferent. It was only the result that mattered.

"It's the best feeling in the world to win promotion. It's Wednesday's day and we've got to enjoy it, which we will do."

He added: "I hope Sheffield United go up through the play-offs now because it's great for the city to have the two clubs playing each other."

After the match, Wycombe boss Gary Waddock said that he is aiming to make an immediate return to League One following his side's relegation to the basement division.

"Hopefully in a year's time we'll be able to get back to this level. We need to bring in some new faces," he said.

"I thought we handled it very well today. We had a few young players out there and it was a fantastic atmosphere."
