Irvine: We must smarten up

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has urged his side to smarten up after they suffered a 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat at Grimsby. Mariners new boy Alan Connell opened the scoring after 19 minutes before Luke Boden equalised just before the interval. Peter Bore settled the game with an impressive finish after 79 minutes and Irvine says there is plenty of work to be done before the new campaign kicks off. He said: "I'm disappointed because I want to win all the games, even the friendlies. It took us 30 minutes to get into the game and I think we have to be smarter than that. "There is work to be done between now and the start of the season because that is when the real ball comes out. "But we did grow more and more into the game and I thought it was against the run of play when they scored the winning goal."
