Irvine happy with Deepdale reception

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine was frustrated at losing Jermaine Johnson during his side's 2-2 draw at Preston but believes his squad can cope in his absence. The winger was forced off after just nine minutes and replaced by Tom Soares in a game that saw the Owls fight back from two goals down - scored by Neil Mellor and Paul Coutts - to clinch a point courtesy of Tommy Miller and Marcus Tudgay. Irvine said: "I don't know whether the loss of Jermaine Johnson was a big blow psychologically because he's been excellent for us in recent games. He gives us a cutting edge but we have to cope with these sort of setbacks." Former Preston boss Irvine was given a warm reception by the North End fans and admitted he was touched by their welcome. "It was fantastic," said the Scot, who revealed he has had plenty of support since he was ruthlessly shown the door from Deepdale in December. "I've had a lot of letters, e-mails and phone calls from people saying that I would get a nice reception, but I didn't quite expect that level of reception that I got. It was very humbling and something that I'm really grateful for."
