Irvine blasts "terrible" defending

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine criticised his side's defending after they came from behind to draw 2-2 at home to promotion-rivals Charlton. A Scott Wagstaff strike and a Johnnie Jackson penalty put the Addicks in control but second-half strikes from substitute Paul Heffernan and new signing Reda Johnson drew the Owls level. Wednesday also blew a chance when Johnson was pushed by Gary Doherty in the area in the 38th minute but keeper Rob Elliot dived full length to keep out Tommy Miller's penalty. Reflecting on his team being 2-0 down after six minutes, Irvine said: "We made a dreadful start but there was a good response and performance in the second half. There were two terrible goals from our point of view. "I couldn't tell what our penalty was given for but I expected Tommy Miller to score because he's got a fantastic record. At half-time I made two substitutions and nearly made three and they had a dramatic impact straight away. "During the interval, I told the players that it wasn't very good - it wasn't acceptable. It was time to take more responsibility because some players weren't really wanting to receive the ball and a lot of people were hiding. "We didn't have options when people had the ball. I feel it's two points lost and deep down I'm disappointed. If we hadn't given ourselves a mountain to climb, then we would probably have come away with all three points and but for a great save and a post near the end we would have done."
