Good start for Wednesday but tough week ahead for small Owls squad
Games coming thick and fast as the season gets underway Sheffield Wednesday got their League One season off to a solid start on Saturday as a goal in each half and a clean sheet gave them an opening day 2-0 win over Rochdale at Hillsborough. The Owls now have a tough schedule ahead of them as they face 3 games in 6 days, taking in plenty of travelling en route. Gary Megson’s side are at home on Thursday evening when they take on Championship side Blackpool in the League Cup in front of the SKY TV cameras. Following that they make the long trip south to play Bournemouth on Saturday before travelling to the north-west to play Bury away on the following Tuesday. Although general fitness should not be an issue at this stage of the season all three teams al likely to be at an advantage compared with the Owls thanks to having greater recovery time as their fixtures are spread more evenly over the course of the following week. Added to that, Wednesday currently have a very small squad. Only 21 players are in the first team ranks as things stand and three of those are goalkeepers. With Jermaine Johnson and Giles Coke currently out injured that leaves Megson with just 16 fit outfield first teamers. The Owls youth ranks are very inexperienced and few are likely to break into the first team this season and so major rotation is simply not an option. Everyone is aware of the clubs desire to add more players to their attacking options and the sooner this is done the better due to the unrelenting football league fixture calendar and the fact that the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
