Gilbert released from Owls contract

The 25-year-old joined Wednesday on a permanent basis in January 2006 after a successful loan spell, but he made just 43 appearances in total for the Owls. The former Plymouth Argyle man was signed by Paul Sturrock - his manager at Argyle - but found first-team opportunities hard to come by under Brian Laws. The emergence of Tommy Spurr has seen Gilbert pushed further down the pecking order and he is now free to seek another club. A Wednesday statement read: "Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Peter for his contribution since signing in November 2005 and we wish him well for the future."
