Clegg cautious over Wednesday hopes

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has warned there is still plenty of work to do to safeguard Sheffield Wednesday's future after they were granted a 28-day adjournment on a winding-up order. The Owls appeared in the High Court this afternoon in relation to an unpaid PAYE bill of £600,000 and Mr Registrar Jacques granted them an extra four weeks to pay after their lawyers claimed the club was on the "verge" of a takeover deal with a consortium of local businessmen. However, the Owls are facing a separate order relating to a hefty debt owed to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs. Wednesday chief executive Nick Parker has called for suitors with a genuine interest to come forward quickly in a bid to sort out a takeover, while Liberal Democrats leader and Sheffield Hallam MP Mr Clegg insists the result is only a case of buying some time. "The adjournment is welcome news for Sheffield Wednesday and will hopefully give the club the time it needs to attract the required investment," he said. "It is, however, only a stay of execution and much more needs to be done to safeguard the long-term future of this wonderful football club."
