Carlos Carvalhal is the new head coach of Sheffield Wednesday, the Sky Bet Championship outfit have announced.

The Portuguese replaces Stuart Gray who was controversially sacked earlier this month after guiding the Owls to a comfortable 13th-placed finish last season.

Carvalhal will be joined at Hillsborough by countrymen Joao Mario, Joao Cunha and Bruno Lage who will form his backroom team.

"Sheffield Wednesday are delighted to announce the appointment of Carlos Carvalhal as head coach at Hillsborough," read a statement on the club's website.

"The Portuguese is joined by backroom team and compatriots Joao Mario, Joao Cunha and Bruno Lage."

The appointment of Carvalhal had been expected for over a week with reports also linking the Owls with a move for Swindon boss Mark Cooper.

Carvalhal, who has spent the bulk of his managerial career in his homeland, had a spell in charge of Sporting Lisbon while also spending a season with Turkish giants Besiktas and Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri believes he has the pedigree to get the club back into the Premier League.

"I firmly believe that this appointment will take our team and our club to the next level and towards where we all want to be, the Premier League," he said.

"It is important for our supporters that they watch their team play attractive, aggressive and entertaining football.

"Carlos buys in completely to this philosophy and I am confident that his experience, knowledge and ability will herald the start of a successful new era for Sheffield Wednesday."

The Owls have undergone a complete change in management structure this summer, with the introduction of a Sporting Director Committee to oversee affairs at Hillsborough.

That committee includes former West Ham and Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder, scout Paul Senior and former Fulham coach Jonathan Hill.

Gray was also part of that committee before his shock departure and it is likely that Carvalhal will take his place there as well as in the dugout.

Chansiri added: "Since I came to Hillsborough in February, I have slowly absorbed how to become 100 per cent part of the Sheffield Wednesday family.

"Myself and my team have worked extremely hard as we all have the same target, the same objectives. We are stronger now and learn more about football every day.

"Carlos, myself and everyone connected with our club have the same ambitions."

After a series of jobs in Portugal, Carvalhal was named as interim boss at Sporting in 2009 but left the following summer before also acting as interim boss at Besiktas in the 2011-12 campaign where he also found himself not retained.

Carvalhal was not the only arrival at Hillsborough on Tuesday, with French defender Vincent Sasso joining on a season-long loan from Braga. Centre-half Glenn Loovens also signed a new one-year deal.
