Owls increase gap

This weekend turned out to be a good one for Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls enjoyed a gritty 1-0 win against promotion chasing Crystal Palace at Hillsborough on Saturday while some of the teams struggling at the foot of the Championship table failed to pick up maximum points.

Dave Jones side made it 7 league matches without defeat and secured 3 points against the high flying Eagles thanks to Leroy Lita’s fine headed goal late on at S6. The Owls have only lost 1 of their last 12 Championship matches and now 40 points from 33 games.

Elsewhere at the wrong end of the table Barnsley’s winning run ended abruptly with a 5-3 defeat at bottom of the table Bristol City, Peterborough lost 2-0 at home to Birmingham City and fellow strugglers Huddersfield ad Ipswich played out a drab 0-0 draw.

On Sunday relegation threatened Wolves lost 2-1 at home to top of the table Cardiff City.

The Owls are by now means safe as yet but these results do allow them a little breathing space. Wednesday are now 5 points clear of the bottom 3 and are just 4 points behind 11th placed Derby which shows how tight things are in the Championship.

Wednesday also have the added bonus of having played a game less than 3 of the teams below them as well as 3 of the teams immediately above them as well. Of the teams in trouble only Peterborough of the teams have played less games than Wednesday they have now slipped into bottom place, 7 points adrift of the Owls.
