2 out at Hillsborough as Owls offer 3 new contracts

Midfielder and defender on their way out Sheffield Wednesday’s preparations for next season have started in earnest with 3 out of contract players being offered new deals at the club. Defender Lewis Buxton, midfielder James O’Connor and winger Jermaine Johnson will all have the option of extending their stays at Hillsborough. In a season in which the Owls defence has undergone many changes Lewis Buxton has been one of the most improved and consistent performers and it is not a surprise that he has been offered a new deal. With loan defender Rob Jones having returned to Scunthorpe Buxton is one of the most experienced defensive players at the club and his ability to play in a variety of positions across the back line is a big asset. The potential retention of James O’Connor is more of a surprise but his experience and excellent attitude have been highlighted by Gary Megson during his short time in charge at the club and these are attributes that any successful squad will require. With a host on new players expected to be brought in over the course of the summer O’Connor may not necessarily be a 1st team regular but his commitment to the cause is an asset that Megson evidently holds in high regard. Jermaine Johnson has been something of an enigma during his time at S6 to date. His goal on Saturday gave evidence of what he is capable of and on his day he can be a match winner at this level. The key is getting him to produce his best on a consistent basis and work on honing certain attributes of his game, something which Gary Megson feels is worth pursuing. On their way out of Hillsborough are midfielder Tommy Miller and defensive utility man Richard Hinds. It had been thought that Miller, who captained the side under Gary Megson and had a good finish to the season, may be offered a new deal but the former Ipswich man was one of the clubs highest earners and it was thought that he would have to a pay cut in comparison with the deal he originally signed when the club was in the Championship and this has now seemingly fallen flat. Richard Hinds has been with the Owls for 4 seasons but has been on the periphery of the 1st team of the past couple of years, making just 11 league starts in the last 2 seasons. Gary Megson has outlined the fact that he would like to bring 6 new players in for the start of next season and chairman Milan Mandaric is supporting his manager in trying to bring these players to the club as they look to make a promotion challenge next term.
