Speed vows to give kids a chance

Sheffield United boss Gary Speed wants to unearth more homegrown talent at Bramall Lane but will only promote young players from the academy if they "can do a job". Jordan Slew is the latest to progress into the first-team squad, making his debut off the substitutes' bench in the recent home defeat to Watford. Speed said: "I put Jordan on the bench against Forest and Watford and threw him on because he had been scoring goals for the youth team. "He's still young and needs to improve in lots of areas but he's giving himself a real chance by working hard in training and scoring regularly. "Jordan must score consistently for the reserves and gradually take that step up because he has a bright future ahead of him. "If our youngsters are good enough and can do a job they will certainly get their chance. But I don't want to be chucking lads in for the sake of it and harming their development because sometimes it can be a backwards step if things don't go to plan."
