Speed silent over Wales reports

Sheffield United manager Gary Speed has refused to comment on speculation linking him with the vacant position as Wales national team boss. The 41-year-old, who replaced Kevin Blackwell as Blades manager in August, has been heavily linked with the role that has been available since John Toshack left by mutual consent just over three months ago. Earlier on Saturday afternoon the Football Association of Wales dampened such speculation, telling Press Association Sport that the former midfielder had not been interviewed and that they hoped to make an announcement on Tuesday. And, following the 1-0 defeat at South Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley, Speed refused to answer any questions regarding his future. However, Speed insisted that the speculation had not been a distraction this week. "Not one bit," he retorted when questioned. "If you're weak-minded you can use that as an excuse but I'm not using it as an excuse and the players certainly won't be using it as an excuse."
