Defensive duo set to miss out

Sheffield United defenders Tony McMahon and Danny Higginbotham are both expected to miss out against Preston.

McMahon missed the midweek defeat at Crewe with an Achilles problem that has required an injection, while Higginbotham was replaced at half-time on Tuesday night due to a hamstring strain.

Manager Chris Morgan is unlikely to risk either player in the final game of the regular season ahead of next week's play-off semi-finals.

Another defender, Matt Hill, and striker Dave Kitson are both likely to return to contention after being rested at Crewe.

Midfielder Callum McFadzean is hoping to retain his place after making his first league start for the club in midweek and fellow teenager Joe Ironside is pushing for his full first-team debut.

The Blades, assured of a top-six finish, have won only one of their last seven matches and are chasing their first league win in four.

Preston will have Keith Keane available for the trip.

The defender was due to go under the knife to sort out a hernia problem on Thursday but has postponed the operation after Paul Connolly picked up a hamstring injury in Tuesday night's defeat to Crawley.

Joe Garner is expected to return into contention after sitting out in midweek due to a knee complaint, while Stuart Beavon will have his shoulder injury assessed, but Simon Grayson has everyone else available.

"There is no better game to end the season for the players," the manager told the club's official website. "A Roses match, a big crowd, players wanting to perform well against some good players who are trying to get into the Championship, so it's a good test for us and it's a game everybody should be looking forward to."
