League One FTBpro PFA Fan Player Of The Year Contender: Harry Maguire - Sheffield United

22 May 2014 15:23

Harry has been a colossus at the back for the Blades, both in terms of stature and ability, and having already skippered the side he is being widely tipped as a permanent captain of the club – and a future England international, having already represented the Under 21s.

His aerial ability makes him a dominant force at the back and a danger in the opposition box where his goals have been vital as Sheffield United fell just seven points short of a top six finish behind Peterborough United. A shot at automatic promotion next season is certainly on the agenda.

Newly-promoted Wolves are said to be one of a number of clubs interested in Maguire who was also linked with Manchester United earlier in the season. Like most of his United teammates, Harry has benefited from the management and coaching skills of Nigel Clough in recent months.

Maguire cited Clough’s appointment in October as the catalyst for United’s upturn in fortunes, together with the former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest centre-forward’s decision to hand Blades’ veteran and former caretaker boss Chris Morgan a prominent role on the coaching staff.

“The gaffer, Andy Garner, Gary Crosby and Chris Morgan have been brilliant,” Maguire said. “Morgs is still a big influence in the dressing room. Basically it’s just the gaffer’s positive attitude. He’s given us belief and has shown great confidence in all of us.

“Every day I come into training knowing that I’m going to enjoy the session. The gaffer joins in with the banter and also shows a few glimpses of what a player he was. I try to give him a little kick when I can get close enough. There’s a real buzz and confidence about the place.

“The defensive record has been unbelievable really, but it’s not just the defence because, right across the team, we’ve got a bunch of good honest lads,” adds the 21-year-old who has already clocked up almost 150 appearances for his hometown club.
