Deane approves of Speed selection

Former Sheffield United striker Brian Deane has backed Gary Speed to become the new manager at Bramall Lane. The Blades are poised to name Speed as Kevin Blackwell replacement following his departure in the wake of Saturday's 3-0 defeat by QPR. Deane, who made over 200 appearances for the Blades, was a team-mate of Speed's when the pair were at Leeds together in the early 1990s and believes the former Wales international has the right credentials for the job. "He was a fine professional, well liked and very intelligent," Deane told Yorkshire Radio. "Speedo has played all of his life in the top division and people respect him. So I think it is a good appointment. He will bring some fresh ideas and it is a win situation for the club."
