Boss `overwhelmed` by first game
Gary Speed revealed he had been "overwhelmed" by the support he received from Blades fans before, during and after his first home game in charge of the club.
Speed, who stepped up from coach to replace former manager Kevin Blackwell a fortnight ago, saw his side beaten 1-0 at Middlesbrough in his first game in charge, but the Blades secured their opening win of the season thanks to debutant Jean Calve's solitary strike against Preston at Bramall Lane.
Speed said: "I never expected the welcome they gave me because I'm not new and have spent a couple of years on the sidelines as coach.
"It was a bit overwhelming to be honest, especially when they applauded me at the end as well. They were really patient throughout the game, which definitely helped because it gave the lads the confidence to keep trying to do the right things.
"All my background in the game under high-profile managers didn't really prepare me for the supporters' response, the experience and emotions I felt out there, but I want to give my staff and the players a big thank you because they've been right behind me.
"The players gave me 100% and I know they always will, whether we win or not, so if the fans and the players continue like this we can have a good season."
