Blades worthy winners - Clough

Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough felt his side's late comeback gave them just what they deserved after their dramatic 2-1 victory at MK Dons in the Capital One Cup.

Two late goals by substitute Michael Higdon edged the all-League One tie in the Blades' favour, putting the visitors into the quarter-finals just a season after they reached the last four of the FA Cup.

Clough said: "It's an incredible achievement to get into the last eight as a League One side - it's brilliant.

"I thought over the course of the game we just about edged it in terms of chances.

"I thought our spell at the start of the second half was good - first half there was nothing in it, a bit cat and mouse then a rash challenge by Craig Alcock gives them the lead.

"However, after that I thought we deserved our two goals.

"Michael scored the winner as well in the last round at Leyton Orient and he's got us through again tonight with two goals so he can't do too much more than that.

"He's back from suspension, this is his second game back and he's done brilliant in coming off the bench and scoring those two goals.

"I thought all round it was a good solid team performance which showed the strength of the squad."

MK Dons broke the deadlock after 67 minutes when Alcock chopped down Dele Alli in the penalty area and Benik Afobe calmly slotted in from the spot.

Sheffield United looked to have ensured extra time with four minutes left when Higdon headed in Jose Baxter's cross following a quickly taken corner.

But the Blades snatched it in the third minute of stoppage time when Jamie Murphy's corner found its way to Higdon, who smashed in his shot via the post.

MK Dons boss Karl Robinson said: "It's disappointing and I've told the players in the changing room that we need to take care of the finer details.

"Set-pieces we know are a strength of Sheffield United and it's stupid, it's silly and we need to learn from that so we can use it as a positive.

"I thought we looked better when we made the substitutions and I thought we would have gone on from there and taken our chances, but we never and we paid the price for that.

"Everyone will remember the good parts of the run we've had in this cup.

"We've had some wonderful moments that will live with us forever and a day and it's a bit sour the way it's gone this evening, so people will be disappointed with that, but we can't win them all.

"We need to make sure that we can come back a little bit stronger."
