Plymouth Argyle manager Peter Reid has allowed his assistant John Carver to hold talks with Sheffield United concerning Gary Speed's request for him to join his Blades' backroom staff... He was installed as Blades manager yesterday (Tuesday), and Gary Speed is wasting no time in trying to bring in the right man to be alongside him during his stint as United manager. Gary Speed has outlined John Carver, Peter Reid's assistant at Plymouth Argyle, as his number one candidate to join his backroom staff. Carver was at Newcastle United at the same time Speed was playing for the Geordies. Discussions are currently taking place and an agreement between Argyle and the Blades is understood to be struck in the next few days. Sam Ellis, Kevin Blackwell's assistant, will stay play a role at Bramall Lane, the club confirmed on Tuesday. Confirming on Plymouth's official website, Reid stated: "Sheffield United called me, and I have given them permisison to have a chat wth John." Carver is familiar with Speed, of course, but he also knows Sam Ellis well after spending time with him at Leeds and Luton. Carver and Ellis were part of Kevin Blackwell's set-up at Elland Road and Kenilworth Road. The image used on this article is copyright to Action Images and SportBox.TV
