Blackwell: Blades can't splash out

26 October 2009 15:59
The squad has been hit by a catalogue of injuries and Blackwell has seen his promotion hopefuls slip from fourth in the table to 13th in the space of three weeks, with defender Andy Taylor, who sustained a thigh injury in Saturday's defeat to Cardiff, becoming the 10th first-team casualty.[LNB]Blackwell said: "There isn't the money there so I can't just go and get players but if the lads play as well as they did against Cardiff they will win more than they lose."[LNB]He added: "We have the smallest squad in the Championship and (chairman) Kevin McCabe is well aware of what we need because you can't build a team on loans. He's a first-rate chairman and is doing all he can to see us through this economic downturn.[LNB]"We are asking young squad players to fill some big, experienced boots because of our situation and to play so many at once wasn't something we could have envisaged.[LNB]"When we have a full complement of players I think we have a strong first XI and a real chance but the squad is very thin and we can't carry long-term injuries, suspensions or loss of form in anybody or we will be a mediocre team."[LNB][LNB][LNB]
