Sheffield United chief executive Trevor Birch has stepped down following the departure of manager Micky Adams. The former Port Vale boss won just four of his 24 games in charge of the South Yorkshire outfit since his appointment in December, as a result, the side dropped into the third tier of English football for the first time since 1989. Subsequently, Adams and assistant manager Alan Cork departed the club early on Wednesday morning and the decision was made that Birch would leave also his role to become a consultant to the club in the short term. Chairman Kevin McCabe told the club's official website: "Trevor's considerable contacts and experience will help us as we re-shape the football club and focus on our transfer dealings." The former Chelsea and Derby chief executive joined the Blades in November 2009 as a replacement for Terry Robinson.
