Shakhtar Donetsk have signed the Brazilian Bernard, a supposed Arsenaltarget, for £21.5m, both The Guardian and Daily Mail report. With the departure of Gervinho, possibly to Roma imminent, many people thought Bernard was anideal replacement for the Ivorian, but Atletico president Alexandre Kalil said “Arsenal told us that they would bid, but never did”, in an interview before the transfer was confirmed.
Bernard is one of many players to be linked to Arsenal thisseason and, much like all the others so far, has in fact, not ended upthere. He has scored 22 goals in 3 seasons at Athletico Mineiro, located in the south east of Brazil, and also has 5 caps for the national squad. Shakhtar meanwhile will be glad to have his services as they gear up for another Champions Leagueassault, which last season saw them beat Chelsea and draw witheventual finalists Borussia Dortmund. Arsenal fans will be extremely frustrated having lost out on yet anotehr possible transfer target this summer.
