Upbeat Adkins eyes play-offs
29 Apr 2009 - 10:55:23
Scunthorpe United boss Nigel Adkins is confident of securing a play-off place ahead of the final round of League One fixtures, following his side's 3-0 win over Cheltenham Town on Tuesday.
Goals from Paul Hayes, Cliff Byrne and Henri Lansbury secured three precious points against the already relegated Robins and the Iron now know that they will claim a play-off place should they avoid defeat to nearest rivals Tranmere Rovers at the weekend.
"This was just the result we needed to take us into that vital clash in confident mood," said Adkins.
"Tranmere have now got to come here looking for a win and we will be looking for one too.
"The one difference now is that if that game finishes level at the end of 90 minutes, that will be enough for us to get into the play-offs."
Meanwhile, scans have revealed that defender David Mirfin and midfielder Lansbury did not suffer broken bones in the win over Cheltenham.
However, Lansbury will miss the weekend game - the last of his loan spell from Arsenal - with knee ligament damage.
