Scunthorpe United striker Martin Paterson has been told he needs a hernia operation that will force him to miss the last two games of the season.

The 20-year-old saw a consultant in Manchester on Thursday who confirmed the bad news.

Paterson, who has scored 14 goals for the Iron this term, will have a bilateral hernia repair on Tuesday and should be ready for pre-season training in July.

The former Stoke City forward has been United's top scorer this term, but was unable to stop Nigel Adkins' side slipping to relegation.
