Iron set sights on Paterson

Scunthorpe United are hopeful of signing out-of-contract Stoke City striker Martin Paterson. The 20-year-old has been offered fresh terms by the Championship club, but Iron boss Nigel Adkins believes a deal could be struck with the player who scored six times in 15 appearances while on loan at Grimsby Town last season. "We tried to get him here on loan last season, but he was not available then," he told the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph. "We have made another good enquiry about him this summer and are trying to go through the right channels. "He is now out of contract and is a hungry, young and talented player who I'm trying to bring to this club. "We had tried to keep the negotiations under wraps, but it has come out into the open now. "I would like to think we are in with a good shout of bringing him in to Scunthorpe. He wants to come, but nothing is final until pen has been put to paper." Meanwhile, defender Cliff Byrne has agreed a new two-year-deal to keep him at Glanford Park until 2009.
