    Iron make double swoop

    07 Jul 2009 - 10:51:45

Championship new boys Scunthorpe United have completed their first two signings of the summer, bringing midfielders Michael O'Connor and Josh Wright to Glanford Park.

Twenty-one-year-old O'Connor arrives at the club from Crewe Alexandra for a fee which could rise to £225,000.

The Northern Ireland international has penned a three-year deal with The Iron after making 80 appearances for the Railwaymen.

Meanwhile, Wright moves to Scunthorpe after being released by Charlton Athletic.

The 19-year-old was on loan at Gillingham last season, starring in their League Two play-off final victory over Shrewsbury Town.

The England Under-19 international was released by the Addicks as part of a cost-cutting exercise, prompting Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins to snap him up on a free transfer.

Wright has also had temporary spells at Brentford and Barnet, making him an experienced player for his age.

"I'm very pleased to bring in Josh Wright," Adkins told the club's official website.

"He's a very talented football player who we've been aware of for a while now. He's got a great range of passing on him. He's young, he's 19 and has been involved in the England set-up."

Adkins said of O'Connor: "He's come in and we're delighted with him. He's been the captain at Crewe and has great leadership qualities.

"He's an exceptionally talented football player who is fantastic on the ball."
