Iron end Gillespie interest
30 Jun 2008 - 15:36:13
Scunthorpe United boss Nigel Adkins has decided not to pursue his interest in Cheltenham Town's highly-rated striker Steven Gillespie.
The Robins are believed to value the 23-year-old at £500,000, even though he only has 12 months left on his Whaddon Road contract, and Adkins is not prepared to pay such a large transfer fee.
"Cheltenham have turned down one bid of £400,000 from one club - and we won't be going any higher than that," said Adkins. "We are, as we always have been, looking elsewhere.
"I know there is mass speculation about players that we might be interested in. But we haven't spoken to Chesterfield about Jamie Ward and we haven't spoken to Mansfield about Michael Boulding.
"What we're going to do is bring in another striker who can help us score goals, to add to the three players we already have here, who I'm very happy with.
"Now Andy Butler's gone, we'll also be bringing in another centre-half. We're also looking to bring in another midfield player and a full-back.
"But we'll do our business in private. There are several players that we've spoken to who nobody has a clue about - and that's important to us."
