Crewe Alexandra midfielder Michael O'Connor is close to a move to Championship new boys Scunthorpe United after the clubs agreed a fee for the player.

Crewe, recently relegated to League Two, are resigned to losing the Northern Ireland international.

Scunthorpe appear to have beaten League Two side Lincoln City in the race to land O'Connor, after the Red Imps took the player on-loan last season.

"United have had an undisclosed bid accepted by Crewe for their midfielder Michael O'Connor," read a club statement.

"The club now have permission to talk to the Northern Ireland international."
