    Iron aim to keep Sharp

    16 May 2007 - 14:28:09

Scunthorpe United have opened negotiations over a new contract with Billy Sharp after revealing they have turned down a bid from a Championship club for the strike sensation.

The Iron have rejected a £1.5million approach from Sheffield Wednesday, while Preston North End have also made an enquiry for their 32-goal leading scorer.

And in response to the interest, Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins has opened talks aimed at keeping the highly-rated youngster at Glanford Park beyond the end of his current deal, which expires next summer.

"There has been interest from Sheffield Wednesday and Preston. Sheffield Wednesday have made a bid and we've turned it down," he told the club's official website.

"There's going to be a lot of speculation throughout the whole summer about Billy Sharp because he's a hot property. He's our player and we want him to stay at our football club.

"We've spoken to his agent and both he and Billy are well aware that we want him to stay.

"It's going to be a long summer. It's still early days, and the scenario is that this situation will run and run for the length of the summer.

"But Billy Sharp will not leave unless there's a move that's right for him and Scunthorpe United are reimbursed accordingly."
