Scunthorpe United manager Nigel Adkins was relieved to beat local rivals Grimsby Town 2-1 in front of the biggest crowd of the night in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
The Mariners, without a victory in the league all season, hit the woodwork three times as Adkins' side rode their luck before reaching the next round.
The Iron boss said after the narrow success: "This was a match that we couldn't 'win' whatever the score.
"Our object was to reach the next round and that's what we've done. We knew that this would probably prove to be one of our hardest games of the season and that's how it proved.
"They showed great character. This was always going to be the 'banana skin' that everybody talked about.
"I haven't seen Grimsby play this season, but I would think this was probably one of their best displays of the season.
"It was just about getting through the tie and that's exactly what we've done."
